You resist the urge to scratch your back, and instead set about trying to locate the source of that wretched voice.
Trying not to make a sound, you wait for the voice to call out again. When it finally does, you are concentrating so hard on sensing the point of origin, the actual content of the call goes in one ear and out the other. you do, however, register a new tone of urgency in the voice.
You stoop down to the sewer grate below, and peer inside. You can just make out the vague outline of a man's face in the darkness below. He is waving his arms at you, and shaking.
"CLOSER!" he commands you, violently.
What do you do?

2. Timidly move closer to the grate
